The museum industry, driven by art museums seeking better venues, experienced a national building boom in the late 1990s and the first half of this decade, said Bell, the museum association president.
He said new destination attractions, such as the popular new California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco, often include more and better shopping and dining facilities than museums of the past, enhancements that Bell said are helping to boost museum bottom lines.
"People love museums, and if you enhance that experience a little bit and make it fun and make it affordable, they will come," Bell said. That hasn't changed with the recession. "Right now in the down economy, we're hearing about uniformly record attendance rates," he said.
I do think it's funny that it may have taken "better shopping and dining facilities" to get us in there, but what the heck. If it's inducing more people to go, then I'm all for it.
