Exploring the roads

"The challenge of life is to have the energy to explore all the roads that have opened up -- and following them to the end." (author unknown)

August 1980. . . New Mexico State University. . . Alumni Avenue dorm. . . my orange pinto. . . three good friends and I with the fourth friend taking the photo. That was the life.

It's been 27 years. The only one I've seen in 23 years (or more) is the blonde. She was a close high school friend, so we have a lot of very old connections.

The one in the cowboy hat passed away this past fall after a 5-year battle with breast cancer. She was a Fulbright scholar, an attorney, a judge. She was about 44 when she passed, and she left behind a husband and daughter. I wonder how she felt about her life and the way she lived it. . . We'd not been in touch since graduation, but I suspect she met her challenges along the way head on. She was a "take the bull by the horns" kind of person.

And I wonder how the rest of us will feel when we get to the end and look back. I will probably be able to say that I explored all the roads, but past that, it's too soon to tell.
