Empty Bowls 2007

Empty Bowls 2007, my students' hunger awareness and fundraising event for the local food bank, is just 2.5 weeks away. Last year we raised $10,000, and we're hoping to make at least a couple of thousand more this year. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Empty Bowls is an event that was started several years ago by a high school class in Michigan. The idea has taken off, and people all over the country are using the event as fundraisers for local organizations that feed hungry people. Any organization may use the Empty Bowls name and concept as long as all proceeds go to organizations that feed the hungry.

The basic premise is that local artists and/or art students make ceramic bowls, which are donated to the event. Attendees pay a small amount, such as the $10 donation here, for a handmade bowl along with a bowl of soup and piece of bread to represent a meal that someone would get in a soup kitchen.

In our case, the soup, bread, bowls, spoons, etc., are all donated by local restaurants. In return, we give them credit as sponsors on handouts that we give to attendees. People in the community love this event!
